Gainesville / Alachua County, Florida
Gainesville may be most well known for being the home of the Florida Gators, but there is much more to this North Florida town than the University of Florida. Gainesville is the largest city and county seat of Alachua County, featuring historic buildings, beautiful natural surroundings, numerous parks, museums and lakes.
Alachua County is home to the town of Gainesville, Alachau, Archer, Newberry, Hawthorne, High Springs and Waldo. I-75 crosses the western half of the county and U.S. 301 crosses the eastern half. Both highways are major transportation and trucking thoroughfares.
It is not surprising that Gainesville was recently ranked as the number-one place to live in the 2007 edition of Cities Ranked and Rated and was also ranked as one of the "best places to live and play" in 2007 by National Geographic Adventure.
As home to Florida's largest and oldest university, Gainesville is a state hub for education, medicine, cultural events and sports. The University of Florida and Shands Hospital at UF are the leading employers in Gainesville. The Gainesville, Fla.
